Yoshitoshi

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年, 1839–1892) was a woodblock print master working across the last decades of Edo Japan and the first decades of the Meiji era, born in Edo's Shimbashi district and apprenticed at eleven to the great Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who gave him his artist name. He is widely regarded as the final major figure of ukiyo-e and one of its boldest innovators. His early career produced startling, often violent images—series like Twenty-eight Famous Murders with Verse and One Hundred Stories of China and Japan—that captured a turbulent era of civil war and social collapse.
