Henry Raeburn

Henry Raeburn was a Scottish portrait painter who dominated the art of his era through sheer force of character and technique. Born in 1756 in Stockbridge near Edinburgh, he rose from apprenticeship as a goldsmith to become the leading portraitist of his generation. After studying in Italy under Sir Joshua Reynolds's guidance, he returned to Edinburgh in 1787 and never left, choosing instead to build a singular practice entirely from life. He painted over a thousand works—Scott, Burns, judges, physicians, and nobles who sat for his penetrating gaze. His style anticipated the 19th century: direct, powerful, alive with dramatic light and bold brushwork that reminded contemporaries of Velázquez. Knighted in 1822 by George IV, Raeburn defined Scottish art during a critical moment. He died in Edinburgh in 1823.
